Let's admit it, no one enjoys book work. I'm talking about an assignment like "Read pages 391-396, and then answer the 5 quiz questions at the end"! This to me is useless! Why is a school district paying a teacher $50,000/year to tell kids to read, answer questions, and then take a test to see if they learned it? It sets up the student to not care about their work. An unmotivated student is going to not read, get a C on the test and then move on, having no regrets about not studying and not doing well on the test; thus, reinforcing the uselessness of school.
Not only do students dislike book work, substitutes (like me) do too! I cannot interact with students like I would if we were doing group work, or lecture or even watching a movie. Being a teacher is a higher calling than "read this, answer this, repeat...." Hopefully a new generation of teachers will be able to engage students better and navigate away from tedious book work!
